Business intelligence services with added value for REDA

An old Chinese proverb says, “If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.” KOMIX knows how to do both – depending on the client’s needs. In the project completed for REDA, KOMIX not only successfully implemented a business intelligence solution, but it also transferred the appropriate know-how, thus allowing the client to continue developing solutions in-house and consequently significantly decreasing the total cost of ownership.

Description of the client

REDA a.s. is a company active in the manufacture, sale, and printing of promotional and gift items and the provision of the associated services. REDA was established in 1991 and since that time has grown into a company that has annual returns exceeding CZK 600 million and is now considered to be one of the leading players in the promotional and gift merchandise market, not only in the Czech Republic but in Europe overall. The company’s headquarters are located in Brno, where it also owns a large manufacturing plant. It has branches in four other Czech cities. With annual returns of more than CZK 600 million and 235 employees, REDA is one of the most important companies in the promotional and gift merchandise market in the Czech Republic and in Europe. REDA has subsidiaries in Slovakia, Poland, and China.

Initial situation

In 2007, the comprehensive K2 operational information system was implemented throughout the company. This created an integrated foundation for processing data from the company’s various activities. As this operational system became stabilised and as a result of the increasing volume of data that it contained after a period of time, the company’s management started to focus more on the controlling add-on, which allows the flexible processing of various data and provides supporting materials for making qualified managerial decisions, primarily with regard to cost-benefit analysis and inventory optimisation.

Our solution

The first contact between REDA and KOMIX took place in 2011. Within the space of a few days, KOMIX’s experts developed a pilot solution based on the QlikView Seeing is Believing (SIB) technology and delivered it to the client. The client’s expectations were met and the cooperation of the two companies continued with the purchase of the QlikView licence, training REDA’s team how to use this tool, and the subsequent support provided when QlikView was connected to the K2 system and other external sources. KOMIX also provided support during the subsequent preparation of analytical solutions and reporting for financial, sales, warehousing, and other activities.

As the client had its own in-house IT capacity, the cooperation model that was selected was based on the transfer of know-how. All of the further development of business intelligence solutions thus takes place in REDA, although KOMIX’s experts are always available for consultations and assistance with more complex technical issues.

Evaluation – benefits for the client

Cooperation with KOMIX created the conditions that allowed the client to perform in-house development. The expertise and experience of KOMIX, in combination with the basic solution (the connection to the data structures of the K2 operational system), established a foundation that the client’s staff could use in the next years to build and develop a solution that is now considered to be an integral component of REDA’s know-how.
